By Chloe Mark | February 2017

Many of us with tighter marketing budgets are weary of the posts that encourage us to use Snapchat advertising. We see the headline and say "that's not for my business" or "we can't afford that." However, the potential for success with Snapchat for your business is high, especially if you use it for the right audience and with a strong strategy. Next, consider your audience

Now, notice the demographics of Snapchat users and before investing, consider if it's a good fit for your business. Many of the users are female, millennials, and/or younger than 25. Small business, eegee's in Tuscon Arizona, used Snapchat to promote a giveaway and saw major success. However, their audience is mainly college students. They also had already seen success in their other social channels so they were able to point their following to this new channel right from the start.

If the above stats and ideas inspire you and lead you to believe Snapchat could be a good fit for your business, it's time to consider how to budget and create.

How to budget for Snapchat & plan your campaign

Social Media Week published "6 Ways a Small Business Should Use Snapchat" which point out what a business can do if you don't have the budget of Taco Bell. If you're starting from scratch and need your audience to find you on this new channel, you may also want to check out this guide Social Media Week recommends. Let's review a few:

1. One of the most affordable options is Geofilters. Local Geofilters can cost as little as $5Wallaroo Media ran a campaign with a Local Geofilter that received, "over 23,000 views and the cost was under $7." One avenue in which these work especially well is at an event. If you promote your geofilter beforehand on social and then through signage at the event, it's likely it'll be a fun interactive tool for your attendees. From there, the following of each attendee will see your event which means some free advertising for you.

2. Create a strong story. If you have pointed people to your Snapchat account and are committed to seeing it grow, you can go an even more affordable route and simply use your story as a means of promotion. Showing "a day in the life" or a sort of "behind the scenes" view is a way to portray authenticity – a rather necessary strategy these days.

3. Show your product demos. If your business sells a product, people love seeing how it's used via video. You could use Snapchat as a way to keep your customers up to date on the latest updates and methods of use.
