People who think well, write well.

Blockheaded people write blockheaded memos, blockheaded letters, and blockheaded speeches.

Being a good writer is not a natural gift, and it's something you have to learn -- this may take a lot of practice.

Here are 10 hints:

1. Read Stephen King's *On Writing: A memoir of the craft*. Read it three times.

2. Writing should be another form of how you speak. Make it sound natural.

3. Use short words, sentences, and paragraphs.

4. Don't use gibberish words like irregardless, conversate, and judgmentally. They are hallmarks of someone who is pompous.

5. Don't write more than two pages on any subject.

6. Check and cite your quotes.

7. Never send a letter or a memo on the day it is written. Read it out loud the next morning, and then edit it.

8. If it is important, have a colleague edit and improve it.

9. Before sending your letter or email, make sure you are clear about what you are asking of the recipient.

10. A good rule of thumb when writing is to make sure it's something you would want to read. Have some personality.
