Explanation on our Spooky SEO graph:
Each emoji represents a relationship users on a search engine have to the words they use to find it. Keywords are the words that your customers are typing into Google and other search engines to find what they are looking for (your stuff).
As we move down the x-axis we get more spooky! By that we mean, we get more specific, it’s how you want your Halloween AND your SEO strategy to be. In the world of SEO, the more specific you are, the more you are able to target the right customer. To illustrate, let’s talk about our emoji categories.
- The skull category = is the dead zone: It’s quite difficult to compete on words like Halloween. That’s because a user might be looking for any number of things, like ‘halloween candy,’ ‘best halloween costumes,' or ‘what is halloween?' We want to do some research to get better at our keywords, for more on keyword research visit this post from Torque Mag.
- Moving right along, getting more spooky, we’re getting more specific and we’re also meeting customers who are actually interested in the tricks and treats we have to offer.
- The most spooky zone is typically where you want to be, it’s referred to as the long-tail keyword category. Though fewer people are searching for these things, you have a higher probablility of connecting with them because your selection is closer to what they were looking for. To get started with your SEO game the team at Yoast, creators of one of our favorite Wordpress plugins, have some great tips!
As illustrated in the example earlier we want to get more specific: ‘best celebrity Halloween costumes,’ ‘healthy Halloween candy for kids,’ and ‘is halloween in Europe’ are great improvements. Find the most specific combination of keywords to be competitive online, find yourself higher in the search results pages, and connect with customers in a very efficient way. Remember that smile you had after you dumped out your trick-or-treat score? Having good SEO is something very similar!
