Five Things To Consider When Writing an "About Me" Page

By Youa | April 2016

You would be surprised at how many people groan if they are ever asked to write a bio about themselves – be it for professional reasons or for their own website. Yet, this bio is essential to let others know who you are and what you do without getting your life story. Still sound daunting? Here are five tips that can help you write one without too much agony.

1. Think About Your Audience

As you begin, think about the purpose of your website. Who is most likely to visit your website? With whom will you engage?

If your site is reserved solely for professional purposes, then – depending on your field – you may want to keep it conservative. If your account is for personal use, or if you work in a more relaxed industry, dive in and add a fun twist to your About Me bio.

2. Be Authentic

Remember that this is space that is reserved to be all about you; make sure that it conveys who you are as a person and as a professional in a sincere way, in both form and writing style.

3. Find Your Story

The devil is in the details, and sometimes those details hit a little close to home. Giving a little personal detail in a bio will help potential supporters, employers, clients, and avid readers find what they need in you. Your anecdote is what separates you from the crowd; don't forget to find and share it.

4. What's Your Point?

Be concise when writing your About Me page. While you may want to ramble to get your story out, your content should be able to say who you are quickly and cleverly in as little 100-200 words.

If you’re finding it difficult to be succinct, ask a friend or a trusted individual in your industry to give it a read and suggest changes.

5. Don't Analyze Too Much

This is the most important aspect to remember when writing your About Me content. Keep in mind that this bio can always be changed; just as you evolve, so can your bio. Even though it does need to be correct, coincide with your style, and have a purpose, understand that it's impossible to sum up your work in just a few words. Relax, and find the words that come to mind on instinct.

Think you've found just the right content? Just a minute. Make sure you include the following items to help with telling your story:

  • Photo: Find a photo that is well-suited with the style and tone of your content. The best photos are fun and have a personal feel while still remaining professional.

  • Location: A good detail to add in an About Me section is where you are located. This gives folks a relation as to where you are and may help in finding potential clients that are looking for services in your area.
