A Podcast Roadmap for Marketers, Business Owners and Salespeople (+ a Few ArcStone Favorites)

By Jenna Christensen | September 2015

The past year or so I have become a podcast enthusiast. Through all of this listening, I've compiled my favorite episodes of the past year pertaining to sales, marketing and business. These aren't bite-sized episodes filled with one-off marketing tactics or gimmicky sales speak. Most of these podcasts are interview style and full of stories and strategies that have worked for others.

Also included are some favorite podcasts of late from the rest of the ArcStone team.

Topic: Sales & Marketing

StartUp: #1 How Not to Pitch a Billionaire

A podcast about a podcasting company -- very meta, I know. In season 1 of StartUp, you follow Alex Blumberg (formerly of This American Life) on his journey to starting and growing his new podcasting company, Gimlet Media. In a time where 'transparency' is considered content gold, you literally ride the ups and downs right along with Alex and his team. Although I devoured the entire podcast in just 2 days, episode #1 is a great place to start (and my favorite) as Alex awkwardly pitches one of the top angel investors in Silicon Valley, Chris Sacca.

The Tim Ferriss Show: How Facebook's #30 Employee Quickly Built 4 Businesses and Gained 40 Pounds with Weight Training

Tim Ferriss interviews top performers in their respective fields to deconstruct their habits. Although his interviews are certainly not all marketing focused, I learn something new about management, productivity, positioning and marketing in pretty much every episode, no matter the interviewee.

This episode in particular is a conversation with Noah Kagan, who has worked at Facebook, Mint.com and is the founder of Sumo Me. The episode meanders and Noah can be a bit abrasive at times, but it's hard to ignore his marketing advice with such success under his belt. At over 2 hours long, you may want to save this one for a long car ride.

Enjoy this style of podcast? Check out some of my other favorite episodes:

Chris Sacca on Being Different and Making Millions

Matt Mullenweg on Polyphasic Sleep, Tequila and Building Billion Dollar Companies

Tara Brach on Meditation and Overcoming FOMO

Seth Godin's Startup School: Making Ideas Travel

Seth Godin doesn't need much of an introduction as he is considered one of the premier marketing minds of this generation with best sellers such as Permission Marketing, Purple Cow and Linchpin. His podcast, Start Up School, includes live recordings from an entrepreneur workshop that he ran a few years back. I'll leave you with this quote from episode #8,

"Your idea can be terrific, but if you can't connect it to a medium, for which it to travel, it won't happen. One way to inject an idea into someones head, is to find someone else who is already in their head, and hang something right next to it."

The Growth Show: Mark Roberge

Mark Roberge, Chief Revenue Officer at HubSpot, shares his experience of growing a company and sales team from $0 to $100 million. One of the most interesting takeaways is how important your sales commission structure is for rapid growth and why you should review and change it regularly. Mark wrote one of my favorite books of 2015, The Sales Acceleration Formula.

I've found many of the other episodes on this podcast are hit or miss depending on the host, although this one with Clif Bar CEO, Kevin Cleary is interesting on building a unique corporate culture.
